Section 3) FAQ’s:
E-mail your question to us at info@keyslearning.com. If your question is selected, it will post to this page:
Question 1: My son does not show any interest in reading. He spends his free time playing computer games, watching TV, and playing sports. How can I get him to start enjoying books?
Answer 1: There are several causes to consider when a child is not interested in reading. The first thing we look at is whether he is feeling successful in reading. If you think of yourself and how you feel when you are having trouble in a subject, you may find that you may avoid that subject except when you are required to do the work in that area. Similarly, children who struggle with reading, may not look forward to reading in their free time. The first step is to do a reading diagnosis to find out if your son is struggling with any area of reading. Once that is determined, then the missing skills can be taught to him. When we feel successful, we feel good about ourselves and then will enjoy participating in that task. It is the same with reading. Second, I often involve students in reading materials related to their interests. For example, if he is interested in football, then providing opportunities for him to read about football, football heroes, or about his favorite teams may be more exciting for him than reading a classic we enjoyed in school but is of no interest to him. When it comes to reading, one becomes better at reading by reading–and that can be any kind of material–it can be books, newspapers, magazines, or even articles on the Internet about one’s hobby. So, step 1 is make sure he has the skills in reading to read without struggling, fill in any gaps in his reading skills, and help him find materials to read in subjects in which he is interested. Maybe your son has a problem or question in a particular area of his life–help him find a place in a book, article, or the Internet that provides a solution. Over time, he may discover that reading can be personally beneficial to him, and will add it to his list of free-time interests!
Question 2: My third grade daughter was just diagnosed as having a learning disability and was placed in a special education program. She spends part of her time in a regular classroom and part of the time with a special education teacher. What can I do to help her at home?
Answer 2: The first thing to do is understand what her learning disability is. Does she have a disability with visual input in which what she sees is not conveyed properly to her brain? Is it a disability with auditory input in which what she hears is not conveyed correctly to her? Or is it problem with aural or spoken output in which she understands something correctly in her mind, but the words do not come out as she wishes? Or is it a written disability in which she can orally say what she means, but has trouble expressing herself in writing? To help her, we must start with understanding what the disability is. If you do not know, ask the special education teacher or the school psychologist. Once we know what the specific learning disability is, then we can find another approach to teaching her. What we do at the National Reading Diagnostics Institute is to find out each child’s best learning style and brain style–what we call one’s superlink. Then, we teach the child through his or her best style. In this way, if one sense or learning modality has a disability, we can work through another. By teaching through learning styles, we have seen remarkable growth in all children, whether they are in regular education programs or special education programs. We have many students with learning disabilities who learned to read so well, that they no longer needed to be pulled out of class to go to the special education teacher because they were reading and working on grade level with these special adaptations! So, there is a lot of hope. After you find out from the child’s teacher the specifics of the learning disability, let us know and we can suggest what to do next.
